Living as a European
9 August 2010 in Daily life, Trips, Whatever, Netherlands
As usual, sorry for the terrible delay I write on this more and more abandoned blog. Unfortunately, you know, I am quite a moody man, and I definitely prefer to take some rest rather than writing some nonsense on a laptop.
So, about my last period: I just returned from my holidays, two weeks around Spain and Sicily. You can of course say that a visit in my home land was obvious, but you can’t say the same about the six days I spent around Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid, in a land made popular by things such as paella, siesta, sangría, etc. That trip, as well as my summer trip of two years ago in Belgium and the Netherlands, was finalized to check if a move to Spain might be worth a try sometime in the future. Generally speaking, the outcome was fairly positive, even if it will be far more difficult for me to relocate this time: that is because of a logistic issue (a lot of stuff to move and a very few ideas about how to do it, unless there’s anyone around willing to drive a rented van for 1,700 km), but also because of a link I’ve developed to the country where I currently live. When I decided to leave Italy, it was because I was no longer able to stand living in a chaotic place with no respect towards the youth generation, innovation and civility; but I can’t say I have such kind of problems here in the Netherlands, but just a few, much smaller ones (from the coldness of the local people to the awful quality of the food, my problems with the local language and a weather which can’t work with a Sicilian guy like me). In any case, I think I have already decided about the date when to leave Groningen, but I can’t make it public at the moment. I must still choose where to go, and I can’t rule out the possibility to move somewhere else in the Netherlands before to go out of this country and see how life is outside the orange borders. For sure, should I decide to move to Spain, I would not definitely have problem with homesickness: Barcelona (and also Valencia, but much less about Madrid) looks seriously like Palermo in a lot of small and big things, and the opportunity to spend my summer nights sipping a cocktail on the local beach might be quite a temptation. But anyway, we will see, keep in mind I haven’t decided anything yet, really! Salutamu!
(P.S. The picture above was taken by me in Valencia. Bigots would call it an insult to urban decor, I just call it art at its wildest, freshest state.)
